Everyone knows iFixit is in love with opening up gadgets and studying to bits. iFixit has been doing it for years, the company opens up a product just to see how easy it would be to repair it. Today, the company tore down Sony’s new mega slim console, the PlayStation 3 Super Slim.
Here is your chance to see what the new PlayStation 3 is made out of. One of the biggest questions is: What exactly did Sony change inside the console that it couldn’t bring the console to a lower price?
At least after closely studying the opened up consoled by iFixit, we know that the disc tray is the biggest change on the console. Instead of a tray it is now a top loader. iFixit said that the door of the loading bay for the disc feels really cheap and can easily be broken down. Good news for owners is that the new disc tray is in its modular form, which means it’s twice as easy to repair than a normal console.
Great news for the owners of this model is that the hard disk tray can easily pop open, which means installing a new hard drive is going to be pretty easy. The new PlayStation 3 Super Slim comes with a chunk of storage space that would not require replacement, but if you still need more storage, the disc should take you 5 to 10 minutes to install.
The only problem iFixit saw with the console was its heatsink. According to the company, the heat sink is located so deep that it becomes absolutely necessary to remove the entire motherboard of the console before you can easily access it. The power supply has similar issues. According to iFixit, it is quite easy to repair for anyone who has some knowledge of electronics.
