Xbox 360 console is one of the most famous consoles of all times and it has definitely proved to be a success story for Microsoft. In an announcement, Microsoft announced that aggregate Xbox 360 sales across the world have hit the 70 million mark.
The original Xbox sold just 25 million units during its lifetime across the world and if one compares the sales of Xbox 360 with the sales of the original Xbox, it is definitely a huge number.
Xbox 360 surpassed the 25 million sales mark in 2008 and its sales have been climbing steadily. The console is one of the most liked consoles across the world and the top selling console in the U.S. The console in fact has been the top selling console in the U.S since many months.
However, the console is still behind Nintendo’s Wii console, which according to Eurogamer recorded 96.56 million sales worldwide as of June 2012. Moreover, the PlayStation 3, according to Eurogamer, recorded 63.9 million sales (till March 2012).
The current figures place Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console ahead of PlayStation 3 if we keep the aforementioned statistics into account but what is important to note here is that the sale figures for PS 3 and Wii are relatively old.
On the whole though, Xbox 360 has been a successful console for Microsoft and has done way better than its predecessor, the original Xbox console.
Xbox 360 sales have increased during a time when the overall gaming industry suffers by large. Consumers are not comfortable in spending money on games when they are finding it hard to meet their daily expenses because of a struggling economy.
Hardware and software sales have both dropped and it is pretty impressive to see consoles sales rising during a time of overall economic recession.
However, we are not sure about how things will turn out for Xbox 360 after the launch of PlayStation 4.
