The current generation of video games has changed a lot thanks to smartphones, browser and tablet games. A lot of developers are now moving towards social video games and adapting the free to play business models.
A recent statement issued by Ubisoft confirmed that the company would be launching a series of browser powered free to play games. Following the footsteps of EA which is already running tons of free to play browser based games. The company recently launched Sim City Social on Facebook and recently also announced the new Command and Conquer game to be free to play.
Now Insomniac, the developers best known for games like Ratchet and Clank and Resistance have shared their insight over the video game industry. In an interview with the CEO of the company, Ted Price, it was found out that Insomniac will stop producing single player only games.
Speaking to GameSpot, Ted Price says that the video game industry has immensely changed and now it is being overrun by social and multiplayer video games. In order to follow in the steps of the industry, Ted Price said that he cannot imagine producing a game without a multiplayer mode in it.
The current technology has allowed developers like Insomniac and others in the industry to create great multiplayer experiences. Take for example the new browser powered service from Square Enix that uses an in house engine to give you HD graphics on your browser. You do not have to install or wait for the game to download; you simply play the game on your browser using internet connectivity.
Insomniac is pretty much clear in their new vision now. The company will forever ditch single player only games in favor of high end multiplayer games. But it does not mean that their games will not feature a single player mode, it only means that the games will now always have some sort of multiplayer options.
Insomniac has also launched a new department for development of games for Facebook and Mobile. The new team which is called Insomniac Click has produced Outernauts for Facebook which was released with the help of EA.
Insomniac will also be launching its first ever game outside of PlayStation 3 known as Fuse. This multiplayer cooperative shooter will have four players playing together and will be available on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Till now the developer has been producing games exclusively for PlayStation.
