Apple released iOS 5.1.1 a few days ago and those of you who own Apple devices which can be exploited using the limera1n bootrom exploit can now apply a tethered jailbreak for this iOS version using Redsn0w.
Considering that we don’t have a untethered jailbreak solution yet, we recommend you don’t update to iOS 5.1.1 yet because by the end of the month we might get a untethered jailbreak solution and it would be a shame to restore again at that time.
Ultrasn0w is not compatible with iOS 5.1.1 so don’t update even if you keep your baseband because you will not be able to unlock your device. GEVEY SIM Cards work with iOS 5.1.1 however only if you have the 04.10.x baseband on your iPhone 4. For iPhone 4S you can use the Gevey Ultra S sim cards which unlock the iOS 5.1.1 baseband.
Redsn0w 0.9.10 Beta 9 can jailbreak your device using the limera1n exploit and it is compatible with: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, iPod Touch 3G and iPhone Touch 4G.

Connect your Apple device to your PC / Mac. In Windows go to the folder where you downloaded Redsn0w on, right click on the executable, select Properties and from the new menu go to Compatibility and check “Run this program in compatibility mode” after which select Windows XP, press on Apply and then on OK.
If you don’t follow this step you won’t be able to start your Apple device in tethered mode.
On Mac / Windows, click on Extras and then on Select IPSW and select the iOS 5.1 IPSW and then click on Next. Redsn0w will now implement the exploit and move on to the next step.
Step 3
Click the Back button to return to the main menu.
Step 4
Now you have to enter your device in DFU Mode by following the instructions provided here
If everything worked alright and the jailbreak was implemented then redsn0w should display the Finish button.
Step 5
If all goes all you should now have a jailbroken iPhone, however the fun does not stop here. Your terminal is jailbroken however apps do not work because you only have a tethered jailbreak.
Follow the steps below to boot in tethered mode.
Step 6
Put your device in DFU mode again.
Step 7
Hit the Back button in Redsn0w to return to the Jailbreak & Extras menu.
Step 8
After selecting the IPSW click on Just Boot button from the Extras menu and redsn0w will start your device in tethered mode and you will be able to use your device without problems.
After your Apple device starts you can install all apps without problems.
