Legend of Grimrock is a take by Almost Human on classic old school RPGs. If you grew up in the eighties, you probably remember board based RPG games and how they started making their way to the computer. This game is built upon the exact same formula those classics like Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder was built on. The best thing about the game is that it shows us how an old school formula can still find a place in the current generation. Being a fan of RPGs myself, I decided to get this game and review it.
Your journey starts in Legend of Grimrock with a rough patch. You are charged with treason and are sent to Mount Grimrock as punishment. There you encounter a group of spearmen that best your group and send them down the void to be killed. Your only hope of survival is to fight your way through a series of groups of monsters and find a way through the labyrinth. Just like the old RPG games, you will command a group of four people and fight your way to reach the exit.
Unlike modern RPG games where you can choose a host of different classes, Legend of Grimrock only offers you three classes to choose from. These three classes are mages, rogues and warriors. The game also lets you go into a fight with a premade group of different characters, but it is highly recommended that you choose and make your own group. You may only have three classes to choose from, but special racial bonuses are always at your disposal that can make each character a benefit in some way to the group.
I particularly enjoyed Legend of Grimrock because it comes with great visuals. I have played a lot of old school games in the current generation, but most of them also try to keep the visuals old school. This classic RPG on the other hand has updated visuals to match the current generation of gaming. So now you can enjoy old school RPG mechanics in an environment that feels of today. I wouldn’t mind recommending this game to every old school fan out there.
