Fans of the arena based shooters can finally rejoice. Nexuiz is here to give you the same feeling you got from games like Unreal Tournament and Quake series. I am personally a great fan of the arena based shooters and still miss the good old days when I used to compete against friends. The last known arena game was Unreal Tournament III, after which I have not seen an arena game until now. This game was first released as a mod for Quake decade ago. After so many years, it finally comes out on its own and I have got it here for the review.
Developed by keeping the core mechanics of the arena shooters in mind, Nexuiz will immediately give you a feeling similar to Quake. This is because it was originally developed as a mod for the game using the same engine. So if you have already played Quake, you are going to find the same fast paced action and the rocket jumps that made it popular. Like any other arena based shooter, the game takes place in a small arena where you must kill the other competitors in a given time frame to win.
In Nexuiz you can play against others in a set of nine arenas. You also get nine weapons to play with. The basic match consists of two sides of four players. The game also puts in a little back story into the mix. The story is mostly just there to give you a little feeling of what’s going on and why you are battling it out with others. Just like any other arena shooter, most of the game is about the action.
The best thing about Nexuiz is that its action is exactly what an arena shooter lover would expect, fast, frantic and out of control. You find yourself nine weapons that are distinct in nature, just like in Unreal Tournament. Your basic skills will be based on the weapons you use and how you use them. This game also features mutators that can be added to change the experience of each arena, giving the game even more lifespan and a bit of fun. If you love arena based shooters, you should get this one.
