The Original Shin Megami Tensei game became a huge unexpected hit in 2009, bringing many players to love the combination of excellent storytelling and in-depth strategy RPG gameplay elements. The original game was released on the Nintendo 3DS, but the sequel is back on the Nintendo DS. Now a lot of you will think that bringing a game on an old platform means it won’t work, but Devil Survivor 2 is every bit good as its predecessor, not matter what the platform is. I got the game on and here is its review.
Devil Survivor 2 tells a story of a young high school boy trying to pass his exams to move on. During this time, you come to know that the students of your school are going crazy over a website that can predict their deaths. Out of sheer curiosity, you sign up on the website to find out what the hype is all about. Soon after that, you receive a message on your cell phone containing the video of how you will die. When the video doesn’t come true, a catastrophe hits the town of Tokyo, destroying much of its existence.
You also soon realize that the entire city is being run over by terrifying demons hurting everybody. Fortunately, you and your friends are bestowed with cell phones that can summon demons to help you. Soon after you find yourself not only fighting the demons but also making important decisions that will help you and your friends survive the catastrophe without dying. The story is the highlight of the game and you will often come at places where the decisions become extremely hard to make. There is a lot of tension, drama and suspense with strong characters and a good soundtrack.
Devil Survivor 2 is not only good at story telling but also excellent when it comes to combat. The Final Fantasy tactics type combat will leave you thinking hard for your next moves. The game isn’t quite easy so if you are new to the genre, you should have the patience to learn. This is an excellent sequel anyone who has played a tactics game or the first Shin Megami Tensei game should get Devil Survivor 2.
