Chaos Rings II is a sequel to the Chaos Rings I which was made available on the iOS. Developed by Square Enix, this game show what the developer is capable of when working with a smartphone. There are a lot of common thing between the two games, especially the combat system that follows. In this game, the battles are played out in a turn-based manner. Just like any other JRPG, you come across random encounters that initiate battles. A lot of stuff has also been borrowed from Final Fantasy which I will talk later in the review.
The Chaos Rings franchise has given us an opportunity to return to old school JRPGs which have seen a significant decrease in the number of releases. Fortunately, this series is here to prove that the genre can still be enjoyed. You start as Darwin, a guy kidnapped and sent to a mansion where he is forced to fight against enemies. While the first part had players battling out with teams, Chaos Rings II follows the story of Darwin, who is forced to sacrifice a number of different people he has known from the past in return to save the world.
The best thing about Chaos Rings II is that it has many more features compared to its prequel. It is not only visually great but also increases the depth of the battle system. The new combat system adds the ability to switch different powers on the fly, giving you a lot more strategy to fight against the foes. This time around you can also combine Sopia (the game’s summon power) to help you find out the weaknesses of your foes and expose them. It’s a shame that the battle system is so refined yet the story did not get much of a push.
Throughout my review, I found the story of Chaos Rings II to be bland. But then again, when I looked at the visuals and the expanded battle system, it became easier for me to forgive the linear and uninteresting story. If you have played a lot of JRPGs in the past, be sure to pick this one up because you are going to like it.
