Well, the vampire ball has finally arrived and what fun it was! The CW has been leading up to the ball for weeks and for most fans, it certainly did not disappoint. There’s a lot going on in this episode, but it’s all happening at the ball. There seems to be more parties and dances in Mystic Falls than most towns could handle in a year, but a vampire ball really does take the cake. Everyone is dressed in their best and some of the dresses, such as Elena’s are really quite stunning.
The episode begins with Elena receiving her invitation to the ball. Stephen and Damon do not want Elena to attend, but Elena has her way. Caroline would receive her invitation, as well, but it comes with a gorgeous dress and a personal note from Klaus. When Carolina and Elena get together to talk about that night’s ball, they see Rebekah handing Matt an invite to the event, as well. That’s enough for both girls to get dressed up and see what is going on.
Elena makes quite an entrance to the ball and shocks Damon by appearing and her appearance. Before he can make his way to her, Stephen is there to welcome her. She continues through the crowd on both of their arms. Caroline arrives and Klaus is simply taken with her. Caroline wants none of his attention, though.
Matt arrives at the ball all dressed up in a tux, but Rebekah has other plans for him. She tells Kol that she wants Matt killed in order to hurt Elena. However, she changes her mind when she realizes that Matt really is a nice guy.
Elena steals a moment with Stephen and asks him to keep Damon busy. She wants to talk to the matriarch, Esther. Elijah asks Elena to keep him informed on what is said in that meeting and Elena agrees. However, Elena is surprised to find out that Esther hasn’t returned from being dead for 1,000 years to reunite her family, but to kill them. She enlists Elena’s help, getting a few drops of her blood to put in a champaign toast. Once all of her children drink the champaign, they will be bound together. It’s not clear what the next step of Esther’s plan is, but Elena lies to Elijah and tells him that Ester is simply glad to have her family back.
Damon wakes up from Stephen’s means of keeping him out of Elena’s way and as one might imagine, he’s really pissed off. He finds Elena and tells her that he’s so mad at what happened because he loves her. Elena tells Damon that quite possibly, that’s part of the problem. Damon is heartbroken and rightfully so. He finds Matt on the balcony later on. Kol is there to kill Matt, even though Rebekah told him she changed her mind. Damon and Kol fight and Kol will have to face Esther after he went against her wishes for keeping the evening violence free.
Stephen takes Elena home and she tells him that she wants to know how he can feel nothing. They almost kiss, but Stephen pulls away and tells her that if he cares, then all he feels is pain. Damian, on the other hand, has decided that Rebekah needs to be the belle of the ball and the show ends with a steamy scene of the two of them as they are heading to bed.
