With a massive collection worth $11.6 million it seems that the public is ready to indulge in the escapism which is typical of ‘The Vow‘. This is a movie that is set in a world where romances are tinged with pathos. The romantic fest stars Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. It has entered the record books by scoring the biggest gross earnings on a non-weekend Valentine’s Day showing. The previous record holder was ‘Hitch’ which came in with $7.5 million. This was way back in 2005. The increased commercialization of romance is beginning to pay off and everyone is thinking of joining the action.

Selling the art and science of love

This film has many fans and has already created something of a stir with a great weekend. The storyline in ‘The Vow‘ is as cheesy as can be but there is also some sympathetic treatment from the actors. It was a great weekend for Michael Sucsy who directed the film. For comparative analysis you may want to look at the winner of the 2011 Valentine’s Day stakes in the guise of ‘Just go with it’. It only brought in $6 million. 2010 was a high mark for the day when it grossed $23.4 million. That record has been beaten by ‘The Vow‘ which grossed $41.2 million.

The second position in these stakes has gone to ‘Safe House’ by Universal Pictures. They managed to record $6.1 million. This particular film stars some of the most iconic actors in Hollywood today including Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. It is interesting to note that the entertainment industry has been very successful in commercializing an event that should be all about romance. They know that many unimaginative couples will want to sit in front of the screen on this special day. Therefore they are only too happy to oblige the implied request.
