“The Voice” has it all working for the show this season. Not only has scheduling played a role in the show’s rise to the top, so has the way Nielsen ratings are recorded. “The Voice” is the top series right now according to the Nielsen ratings.
However, you certainly won’t find NBC bragging about how good “The Voice” is doing, especially when it’s doing so well against the veteran “American Idol.” There is a lot of time left in this season and things can change so quickly. “Idol” has been at the top for the last eight years and it’s quite possible it could rebound back before the season is over.
Another thing that “American Idol” has going for it is that it can charge a lot more for a 30 second advertisement than “The Voice” can. In fact, it can charge twice as much and advertisers will pay it. “American Idol” also airs two shows on the typical week, whereas “The Voice” only does one. So “Idol” is getting twice as many ads for twice as much money.
However, for right now, “The Voice” is on top – at least in terms of ratings. Fox is in fourth place right now and Bob Greenblatt, the new entertainment chief, is trying to take third place away from ABC. “The Voice” has had a huge increase in viewership compared to its first season. However, some people say it’s due to the premiere airing after the Super Bowl. Even if that show isn’t factored into the ratings, “The Voice” is still doing well against “American Idol.” “The Voice” has averaged 6.2 viewers without the Super Bowl lead-in episode. “Idol” has had an average of 6.1 million viewers an episode since the new season started in January.
“The Voice” hasn’t had easy competition, either. It won three weeks in a row against “2 Broke Girls” and “Two and a Half Men.”
