When Steve Jobs talked about the post PC era, everybody was sure that the desktops reached the end of the road. Is that the case ? Not really.
Would you let go of your desktop computer at home in favor of a PC tablet or ultrabook ? Probably not. PC tablets and even ultrabooks are right now just an extension of the classic PC. So we are talking about a “era plus PC”, as the IDC representative bob O’Donnell calls it. But let’s see what his arguments are.
“With all respect for Steve Jobs, we are not really in the Post PC era. Right now we are in what I like ti call era plus-PC, when consumers own a PC and other gadgets” Bob says.
PC computers will continue to be a good part of the lives of consumers. Think only about the need to run applications that need high processing power.Tablet cannot offer such power right now. Tablets have their own distinct place on the market and the PC keeps theirs.
“One example would be Adobe and touch apps. They are developed to run on tablets but they do not want to replace the native PC apps” Bob also said.
The IDC analyst thinks that in the next period we are going to witness the development or complementary solutions on the IT market, and not the removal of a range of products because other products were released.
If the statements made by Bob O’Donnell will be confirmed by the industry and by consumers this means that Microsoft and their vision about a unitary operating system like Windows 8 beats Steve Jobs’ vision. It remains to be seen who is right at the end.

I think you are misunderstanding the meaning of Post PC. Steve was not talking about the exclusion of desktop/laptop, he was talking about an era where all parts are equal. If you look at the definition for post modernism, you will see that it is not to the exclusion of everything that came before, it merely means it acknowledges the statement of modernism and says, “we need to modernism AND move forward”
