Sony to Merge PSN with Other Services

The PlayStation online gaming service will be merged to its wider online platform from Tuesday.

In a message to PSN users Sony said that the accounts will be rebranded under Sony Entertainment Network. The online PlayStation users will be rerouted to new login screen for more general service. When any user signs in for the first time they will have to agree to slightly different privacy policy, including the new terms related to parental controls.

It was emphasized by Sony that only network name will change, but the login details will be same. This is latest move by the company to integrate its PlayStation platform to Sony’s broader products and services, a change that CEO Kazuo Hirai has termed as crucial to company’s strategy.

In previous year, Sony combined its entire electronic goods, game consoles as well as network platforms to one division, with Hirai in charge, after shifting its gaming division from the trendy neighborhood Aoyama of Tokyo to Shinagawa district, next to headquarters in 2011.

About its latest change the company said, “This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more.”

The move will be rolled out in software updates to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita game consoles.
