Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots’ tight end, went under the surgical knife yesterday. The surgery was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital by Dr. George Theodore. Gronkowski is expected to spend the next ten weeks recovering.
Gronkowski played in the Super Bowl, but was not very effective. He was limited to just two catches for a total of 26 yards. He sprained his left ankle just two weeks before in the championship game for the AFC. The New England Patriots won that game, but Gronkowski was injured when he was tackled by Bernard Pollard, one of the Ravens’ safeties.
A source on the Patriots team said that Gronkowski had many torn ligaments in his left ankle. This is Gronkowski’s second season and he’s already set records. He had 18 touchdowns this year at tight end and more than 1,325 yards. It’s his personality, though, that has really won the hearts of the Patriots’ fans. That personality has also caused him a few problems, too.
After the Super Bowl on Sunday, there was a video of him and Matt Light, who plays left tackle for the New England Patriots, uploaded to the internet that showed the two dancing without their shirts at a post-Super Bowl party. Many of the fans and sports analysts thought that this was in particularly bad taste because the Patriots lost.
However, the president of the New England Patriots, Jonathan Kraft, said that he knows that Gronkowski is 100 percent dedicated to the team and the sport. Kraft said that Gronkowski is a passionate competitor. He believes that each person would have his own way of celebrating the end of the season and that not everyone will be sitting around and sulking. Kraft said the Patriots had a good season, but just fell a touch short of the ultimate NFL goal.
