Pfizer, the largest pharmaceutical company on the planet, has recalled one million packs of birth control pills. The recall was issued after the company discovered that packs of pills had pills mixed up. This error could have made it much easier for women to become pregnant.
The birth control pills affected were Lo/Ovral-28 and a generic version of the pills. There were 14 lots affected in both the name brand and the generic versions. According to Grace Ann Arnold, who is a spokeswoman for Pfizer, there are one million packs affected.
Pfizer manufactured and packaged the pills, but Akrimax Rx Products marketed the pills under the Akrimax Pharmaceutical brand. According to Arnold, there have not been any reports of adverse health events.
The packs of birth control pills contain 21 pills that contain ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel, which are synthetic hormones. One of these white pills is taken each day for three weeks. The other seven pills in the pack are pink and they do not contain any hormones are drugs. The problem with the packs of pills that were recalled is that there were an incorrect number of inactive pills and the pills were not in the correct sequences. This would make it possible for women to take the wrong dose on the wrong day, which would increase her chances of becoming pregnant.
The company said that the problem was corrected immediately and there are not any immediate health risks. However, Pfizer did say that any women who were using the improperly packaged pills should use another form of non-hormonal contraception.
Lo/Ovral-28 was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration back in 1976. The initial approval was obtained by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. The generic version of Lo/Ovral-28 is offered by several companies, including Watson Pharmaceuticals. Pfizer bought Wyeth Pharmaceuticals back in 2009.
