It is that time of the year when Tinseltown is getting to host a self congratulatory event. The Oscars 2012 represent another milestone in the tradition that has proved to be a high mark for anyone that is seriously interested in acting. The nominees for the title of Best Actor have started to come out. They include Brad Pitt and George Clooney. The other strong contenders that we have to look at include Jean Dujardin, Demian Bichir and even Gary Oldman. Politics will play an important role even as there is an increase in the attention that is given to the people that consist of the nominating and awarding committee. Some people have complained that it is completely dominated by “white” people.
Who is going to take home a gong?
All the actors that have been nominated stand a very good chance of being victors at the Oscars 2012. Sometimes the decisions that have been taken do not reflect the logic of the average armchair critic but that is the price we pay for not being influential enough to change the decisions. Perhaps the dark horse of the competition is Bichir who is from Mexico. He is not part of the establishment and might therefore have something special outside the normal fodder we get from the likes of George Clooney. This is a star that has been working steadily since he was just 14. Gushingly he let it be known that he was overwhelmed by the nomination.
The campaign for the Oscars 2012 has been as efficient as a presidential caucus. We know that influence peddling plays a very important role in determining whether the project can be taken any further. We are watching out for The Descendants, a film project that manages to entertain without falling into the abyss of clichés.
