When Nokia first sealed a deal with Microsoft to use its Windows Phone 7 platform on Nokia based smartphones, we already knew that the company was suffering from staggering losses in the smartphone market. With the new system, Nokia planned on taking a good chunk of the market for itself. Now that plan looks like it’s coming to life. With the newest phone by Nokia unveiled at the CES 2012, the company does look like it’s good to take on the rest of the market, but it lacked one thing. Unlike Android based smartphones, Nokia does not have a low end phone that makes up for the majority of Android based smartphone market.
Rumors across the internet have started claiming that Nokia is indeed ready to reveal new smartphones based on the Windows Phone 7 OS that will be targeted towards a budget market. The source of this rumor was through someone close to the company. This will allow Nokia and Microsoft who both suffer in the smartphone market to once again reach a wider audience. Not all of us look out of expensive good looking phones, some of just want a smartphone that does the basics. Even analysts have admitted that the key of getting some share of the smartphone market lies in cheaper phones.
Nokia will soon be releasing two smartphones in the U.S, which include the Lumia 610 and Lumia 900. Both of these are targeted at the luxury smartphone market, as a result, Nokia will be revealing new phones coming Monday at a conference.
Microsoft is already suffering in the smartphone market due to the reason that it’s operating system is only available on high end phones, which tends to be quite expensive most of the times. As a result, the company saw shares dropping by 2 percent in the smartphone market during the last quarter. Microsoft had 13 percent share almost four years ago, which has now fallen below that number and the company is now looking to gain back that share. Similar story can be said for Nokia, but hopefully, with the introduction of mid range phones, things might settle down for both.
