Over the past few months, I have done a review for a number of games that made their way back to the 3DS using the virtual console market. Many of these games were great reincarnations of already awesome games. Unfortunately, Maru’s Mission, which was just released this week, is a step back from these other games. This is a pure example of a game that lacks the interest of developers themselves; as a result, you get yourself pathetic gameplay, level designs and a lot of technical issues.
My major concern with the game is the level of difficulty present in the gameplay. Maru’s Mission is so easy that it practically doesn’t even sounds like a game. For example, if you are to press the jump button, your character floats in the air, leaving you absolutely invincible from the enemies. Another thing about the combat in the game is that every enemy you encounter in the game can be killed by a single hit. While one shotting your enemies isn’t really that bad, but in other games, those enemies are also quite clever, but here, they kind of act like dead and slow.
To make things even easier than they sound, the developers have also added health pickups in Maru’s Mission. Whenever you kill a monster, it drops a health power-up and you can keep collecting these health pots to get your health bar to 999 points. Remember, each hit you receive from a monster, only takes away 1 point from your health, so in theory, you are practically invincible in this game.
Maru’s Mission is an exceptionally easy game, which in return also means that is quite boring. But that is not all wrong about the game; it also suffers from many tiny and big technical issues. During my playtime, sometimes I was able to stick to ceilings in the game and sometimes even my foes disappeared. I also came across bugs when the stars I shot at the enemies never touched them. There is no amount of fun available in the game, unless you love playing games with god mode cheats on.
