Naomi Watts has been chosen to play Princess Diana in “Caught in Flight,” a film that will highlight the last few years of her life. The film will be directed by Oliver Hirchbiegel. He was the director of “Downfall,” which was a film about Adolph Hitler’s last days. The screenplay was written by Stepen Jeffreys. He is best known for writing the screenplay for “The Libertine.”
Princess Diana’s last few years saw her find her role as a humanitarian and a major international campaigner for various causes and organizations. The Princess of Wales died in a car accident with Dodi Yayed, her boyfriend. This is not the first movie to be made around Princess Diana’s tragedy. In 2006, Stephen Frears brought “The Queen” to the theaters. However, that movie was more about the media madness that occurred between the accident and Princess Diana’s funeral. It was about Queen Elizabeth and Tony Blair and how the tragedy affected them.
Another film, “Amelie” was made in 2001 and it was about a woman who died in an accident in a Paris underpass and was a “motif of Lady Di.” Of course, last year, there was a film introduced at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, “Unlawful Killing,” was written by Victor Lewis-Smith and directed by Keith Allen. It was a documentary based upon a conspiracy theory that the true version of events that deadly night was different from the official version of events.
It’s rather odd, actually, that there have not been other movies about Princess Diana. She was loved by many around the world. She was considered the “commoners’ royalty” and she always displayed true class and dignity. The film, “Caught in Flight” is a testament that royal themes go in and out of favor in movies. However, the furor over the royal wedding last year between Prince William and Kate Middleton, as well as the success of “The King’s Speech” may have played a role in the decision to make this movie.
