Motorhead told fans that they should avoid buying the new box set that is set to debut today. It’s a rather unorthodox move for a band to tell fans not to purchase their music, but Motorhead believes that the project was only done for greed.
The box set contains 15 discs, including their first eight albums. There are also several singles, a photo book, and some posters. The box has a skull on the front – in true Motorhead style – and the eyes light up red. Why does Motorhead not want fans to buy the box set? Because it costs more than $600!
Lemmy Kilmister of the band said that when it comes to their early songs, Motorhead doesn’t have any control over what is done with them. They don’t want their fans to think that it’s the actual band that is offering the very expensive box set. It’s similar to the box set that was offered back in 2009 for The Beatles (Japanese). There was a DVD and 16 discs and it is the most expensive box set ever offered. Today, however, the set can be found online and at auction sites for around $200.
ABBA’s box set contained nine CDs and it sold for around $500. It appears that those who have the rights to the early songs are indeed interested in making some money. However, are the music fans ready to flop down that kind of cash for their favorite band’s box set? On Motorhead’s website, the forum posters had some pretty negative remarks. One user said there was no way he was buying it because there isn’t even one new song in the set. Another said that the only thing different about it was the box.
Motorhead would rather its fans spend their money on their new album or their new DVD. Both were just released last year.
