Man Strangles Wife after She Gives Birth to a Baby Girl Instead of a Boy

A man in Kunduz, Afghanistan is being sought by police for strangling his wife after she gave birth three months ago. The woman had a girl and because the baby was not a boy, Sher Mohammed, 29, became enraged and allegedly killed his wife with his mother’s help.

His wife was 22 years old and this was her third child in four years. Sufi Habib, the police chief of the Khanabad district, said that Sher Mohammad blamed his wife for not being able to have a boy. He eventually went into a rage and beat his wife. He then strangled her until she died.

The man’s mother, Wali Hazrata, has been arrested, but her son has fled the area. Hazrata is being held in the city jail in Kunduz, which is about 30 miles from Khanabad. Hazrata told police investigators that her daughter in law committed suicide because she felt so guilty for not giving her husband a sun.

This report comes just a few weeks after a 15 year old girl was rescued from a locked basement. She had been sold into marriage and was horribly abused and tortured by her husband and in-laws when she refused to work as a prostitute to earn money.

Women continue to suffer in Afghanistan and activists say that in the second quarter of last year, there were 1,026 reported cases of violence. In 2010, there were 2,700 cases, so there has been some reduction in the number of reported crimes against women. However, the cases that grab the media’s attention are brutal. In December of last year, a man sprayed acid at a family after the father refused to allow the man to marry his daughter. Another woman, 21, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after she reported to police that the husband of one of her cousin’s had raped her. She was eventually released after a massive amount of international attention.
