It was meant to be the part that was going to be most interesting for the celebrity fans. M.I.A. then decided to flip Bird as part of the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Meanwhile the NFL is apologizing for the mishaps that occurred. The middle finger was given by the British singer to the chagrin of many fans. At the time Madonna was performing a show stopping number “Give Me All Your Luvin”. There were 110 million viewers tuned into primetime NBC and it seemed like a particularly inappropriate gesture to make. Some observers said that she seemed to swear at one point, almost as if to taunt the public.
Celebrity guest from hell
Without a doubt this was an obscene gesture that has no place in modern sports. Brian McCarthy is the spokesperson for the NFL and he profusely apologized to the fans that had to witness the spectacle of a bratty musician essentially flipping off the hosts. Otherwise this was one of the biggest television events of the year when Madonna proved decisively that she still has the power to move audiences with a single number. A rather pathetic attempt to blank out the offending gesture by M.I.A. fell flat because of poor timing. Christopher McCloskey was responsible for producing the show and he also apologized for failing to obscure the offensive gesture.
It is really puzzling why the singer ever thought that her gesture was appropriate. One supposes that the 2007 hit “Paper Planes” gave her a sense of entitlement. Ever the professional, Madonna continued with her roman-god themed night as she was carried forth into the audience. She was supported by LMFAO and Nicki Minaj. The choreography was amazing even if some critics said that she moved a lot slower than used to be the case. We have to remember that this is a 53 year old woman. Therefore allowances have to be made.
