Sometimes it is best to simply keep your opinions to yourself. That is a piece of advice that might be appropriate for Karl Lagerfeld who had the temerity to call Adele too fat. This is a young woman who is literally changing the face of the music industry. Many fans are relieved to see someone that is not into the “size zero” craze. It therefore seems rather callous that an ageing fashion connoisseur is targeting her for the thing that differentiates this artist from the run-of-the-mill rivals. In any case the public is going to be firmly on the side of the singer who seems refreshingly normal after all the rough time we have had with neurotic singers.
Why target someone about their appearance?
The fashion industry has been criticized for encouraging young women to starve themselves. For the most part Karl Lagerfeld is used to dressing men and women who do not resemble the ordinary citizens. Therefore it seems rather callous that he feels it appropriate to target a singer who is as “normal” as you can get in show business. When he realized that a backlash was virtually inevitable, the designer appeared to backtrack by praising the singer’s voice and talent. That is what should have been the focus instead of appearances.
What does Adele make of this? The singer may appear to be docile but she is more than capable of speaking her mind when the occasion arises. At the moment the fans are up in arms and they are not pleased about the comments that have been released to the press. The harshness shows how shallow the fashion industry is becoming. Moreover one might say that Karl Lagerfeld is no longer the fashion icon that he was. Boring black is not always the best projection of artistic imagination. In any case the negativity is uncalled for and leaves a bad taste for everyone concerned.
