This is a hot cultural issue in the USA where the religious right has a lot of influence. Therefore the appearance of Jamie Lynn Spears on television as a confident role model for single mothers must have ruffled some feathers. According to the preachers, these ladies are supposed to be scroungers who rely on benefits and a questionable moral stance. When we see someone that is turning into a positive role model, some people feel that she is not emphasizing the problems that are associated with teenage pregnancy. Of course she is following in the footsteps of Jenelle Evans and Amber Portwood.

It is not clear whether Teen Mom by MTV is going to encourage or discourage teenage pregnancy. One thing that is almost certain is the fact that we are moving away from the prudish and moralistic approach to these vulnerable young women. Many of them are barely out of the cradle when they start adulthood. The case of Jamie Lynn Spears is not always typical because many of them are abandoned by the people that are supposed to be caring for them. When she gave birth to Maddie, Jamie’s life changed. The father was Casey Aldridge but there were no indicators that he would be a tower of strength.
She says that she did not use birth control because of being scared to see the doctor about it. The fact that she ended up pregnant might have been seen as a blessing in disguise but many of the participants felt confused by her about turn.
