iPhone, the famous production of Apple, was the number 1 smartphone, as it overtook Nokia’s position in June last year. However, few months in after it became the number 1 smartphone in the world, it lost its position to Samsung in September. However, new reports suggest that iPhone has again become the no.1 smartphone in the world.
In the last quarter, 37 million phones were sold by Apple; the number was revealed by Tim Cook two weeks back. However, there is a problem in recording and comparing numbers as companies don’t report their numbers too often now. For example the Seoul based company, Samsung, only reported the number of cellphones it shipped, which is not essentially the same thing as selling them and by last year, it even stopped doing that.
However, companies like IDC are useful in times like these. IDC publishes a report in every quarter that ranks the top manufacturers of smartphones by its approximation of the worldwide shipments of the phones in a nearly watched and observed benchmark. IDC reported its findings on Monday and shared that Apple regained the slot of top smartphone manufacturer in the world with the launch of its iPhone 4S last year while Samsung broke the 30 million units point for the 1st ever time and finished last year as the overall smartphone market leader.
Nokia, the Finnish handset maker posted the biggest year to year decrease amid top smartphone vendors but with the release of its Windows Phones, its smartphone mobile strategy has taken a new turn. IDC also wrote that HTC had some big names launched in the last year but its shipments were still lower than what they were reported to be in the previous quarters. Lastly, Research In Motion, the Canadian based firm, had some mixed results as its new BlackBerry OS 7 smartphone reached a number of additional markets but it still hasn’t been able to regain strength in the markets.
