Let’s say that you installed OS X Mountain Lion on your Mac computer but you want to create a bootable USB drive to get the possibility of installing the OS again. Well, the process is very simple and similar to the one you can create a bootable USB drive for Mac OS X Lion or other Mac OS X versions.
To complete this tutorial you will need a bootable stick that has at least 4 GB of free space otherwise you won’t be able to install the OS on it.
With the help of the stick you can always run OS X Mountain Lion without a internet connection.
1. Download OS X Mounatain Lion from the App Store, you can do that directly from your Mac Developer account.
2. Go to /Applications/ and right click on the Install Mac OS X Mountain Lion.app file and then choose Show Package Contents.
3. Open the Contents file then SharedSupport and search for the InstallESD.dmg file and double click to mount it.
4. Insert the USB stick in your computer and then open Dist Utility and select the USB from the right side of the menu. After you selected it choose the Erase option, then Format Mac OS X Extended and then hit the Erase button.
5. Select the newly formatted USB drive, hit the Restore tab in the upper right side and at Source pick InstallESD you already mounted ad at Destination choose the newly formatted partition of the USB drive
The process might take between 20 – 40 minutes, restart the Mac, press the Option key of your keyboard when the Mac starts to reboot , choose the stick from the new menu and you will be able to install OS X Mountain Lion without problems.
If you followed the steps above correctly then you should have OS X Mountain Lion installed and active on your Mac computer.
