Google Hints at Launching TV Service

It seems that Google might be stepping into paid TV business arena. According to Wall Street Journal Google has filed an application last week to offer video service to the residents of Kansas City Mo.

If the application is approved, Google could launch the service as early as a month from now, according to the article that cites a “media executive currently involved in negotiations to license channels to the service.” The video package offering would have live TV as well as on-demand and online access to TV channels, according to the report, based on previous article by The New York Post.

The source also told the Wall Street Journal that Google is planning to look beyond the Kansas City market and other areas.

If launched the service compete directly against the cable TV providers and probably would be similar to other IPTV services offered by phone companies like AT&T (U-Verse) and Verizon (FiOS)

Last March Google picked Kansas City over 1,100 other communities for its large-scale test bed for ultra-fast internet.

In the Kansas application, Google said it “will utilize national and regional video headed facilities”.

This is not the first time that the ambitious plans for TV service have been revealed. According to WSJ report in November the search engine giant was in talks with Disney, Time Warner as well as Discovery Communications about providing content for the fiber-optic  based video service in those cities.
