PoketNow got their hands on a presentation video of the new mobile operating system from Microsoft. It will be named Windows Phone 8 and the codename is “Apollo“.
In that video, Joe Belfiore, Windows Phone Manager, detailed the new things the new mobile operating system will introduce.
Firstly, on the hardware side, multi-core processors will finally be supported, four different resolutions will be supported as well and the OS will offer support for microSD memory cards. Another important element on the hardware side is the NFC support.
The Windows 8 Kernel will be inspired by the Windows 8 kernel for desktops and tablets, sharing many of it’s base features.
The networking, security and support for files and media applications will mostly bet he same, and apps can be developed natively which makes it easier to port the Windows 8, Android and iOS code on Windows Phone 8. With this change, the Zune sync for PC will be removed. For this feature Microsoft is now developing another software solution.
The Xbox Companion app will have a version on Windows 8 too, the two being able to communicate with each other thanks to the Skydrive integration in both operating systems.
Skype will also play a more important role in Windows Phone 8, facilitating voice calls just like the native phone feature. Actually, in some conditions, when there is a internet connection and the person you want to call is online, the operating system will choose to use VoIP instead of the GSM network. Obviously, these features can be set up by users.
We have to mention the fact that these details were confirmed by Paul Thurrott from Microsoft.
