It’s a rather strange law, but authorities are ready to enforce it. According to KNTV, a television station in Los Angeles, there will soon be fines issued to any beachgoers who throw Frisbees or footballs on Los Angeles beaches. The fines could be as much as $1,000 and the reasoning behind the law is to keep people from getting hit by such flying objects. There is also a provision in the law that says that there can’t be any type of goal set up on the beach, either.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors said that this is the first update to the rules of the beaches since the 1980s. The “rule book” now has 37 pages and is quite specific about what activities can be enjoyed when one is enjoying the sun and surf. There were also additions to the rules that now define the duties and powers of lifeguards.
The new rules state that the only objects that can be played with on the beach are beach volleyballs and beach balls. A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors said that the rules are necessary to protect the public from a spontaneous game of football.
In addition, parents may want to monitor just how deep the holes in the sand are that their children dig with those sand shovels. Building a sand castle is fine, but the hole in the sand can’t be any deeper than eighteen inches or a fine may be issued. However, there could be an exception granted to these rules for productions involving television or film. A special permit will be required in order for these laws to be broken by the television crews or filmmakers, though. Needless to say, these new rules are not exactly popular with the public, especially the locals.
