Art Directors Guild Presents Awards for “Hugo,” “Modern Family,” “Boardwalk Empire”
The 16th annual Art Directors Guild Production Design awards were held on Saturday night and there were a few surprises. Many people expected movies like the “The Artist” and “The Help” to walk away with several wards. Instead, one of the coveted awards for best production design for a period film went to “Hugo.” The nominees in that category were the “The Help,” “The Artist,” “Anonymous,” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Many are already nominated for an Academy Award, as well.
The best production design for fantasy film went to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II.” Harry Potter also has a pending Academy Award nomination. The best contemporary film award would go to “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” This movie did not receive an Academy Award nomination for either best picture or art direction. Some of the other nominees in this category were “The Descendants,” “Drive,” and “Bridesmaids.”
The best TV movie or miniseries award went to “Mildred Pierce.” The presenter of that award was Ed Asner, who recently turned 83 years old. When he walked out on stage, he was greeted with a wonderful ovation, to which he quipped, “He’s alive.”
The award for single camera television series went to “Boardwalk Empire.” That award for was for a show that was an hour long. The half hour long award for the same would go to “Modern Family.” This is the second year in a row that “Modern Family” had won the award. “Saturday Night Live” would win for best unscripted series with multiple cameras.
The 83rd Annual Academy Awards took home its own award in the game, music, or award show category. The Lifetime Achievement award would go Tony Walton, a production designer. He worked on the original “Mary Poppins” and received an Academy Award nomination for that work.
