Freddie Mercury, the original lead singer of Queen, died back in 1991 and since then Queen has featured a variety of guest singers. From 2004-2009, Queen would perform with Paul Rodgers. The band would be billed as “Queen + Paul Rodgers.” However, according to “Rolling Stone,” the latest addition to Queen will be Adam Lambert. He’s very excited about performing with one of his favorite bands, but told Britain’s “Daily Star” that he had no intention of trying to replace Freddie Mercury. In Lamberts’ eyes, that is simply impossible.

Lambert is quick to attribute much of his success to Freddie Mercury. He has long said that Mercury was his idol and he chose one of Queen’s hits for his American Idol audition – “Bohmeian Rhapsody. Durign the final show of Lambert’s season on “American Idol,” Lambert would perform with Brian May, Queen’s guitarist, and Paul Rodgers in another Queen hit, “We Are the Champions.”

Lambert would also perform at the MTV Europe Awards in 2001 with the same two members of the band. They performed a compilation of several of the band’s hits.

Queen will be the headline at the Sonisphere Festival this summer, but now Lambert says that his comments were taken out of context. He says that he is planning to perform at this year’s EMA’s with Brian May and Roger Tyler. However, the Tyler, Queen’s drummer, said that both Tyler and May are in talks with Lambert for a possible tour. Taylor said that Lambert’s exceptional vocal range would make a great addition and that they would like to work with Lambert again.

So for the moment, there’s nothing signed for Lambert to try to fill Freddie Mercury’s shoes in Queen. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s not possible in the future. It could even happen in the very near future.
