Texas Christian University has had 18 students arrested for selling drugs. Four of those arrested were members of TCU’s football team, which was ranked 14th in the Associated Press Poll last year. The 18 are charged with selling marijuana, cocaine, acid, Ecstasy, and prescription medications. The court complaint alleges that the students sold those drugs to undercover narcotics officers. There was a six month investigation that started after campus police started receiving a lot of complaints about drug sales and activity.
Steve McGee, the TCU Police Chief, told reporters that there is no doubt in his mind that all 18 students are drug dealers. The sales of the drugs occurred both on and off the TCU campus. Victor Boschini, the chancellor at TCU, said that all of those arrested are no longer enrolled at the university.
Boschini said that this type of behavior is not and will not be tolerated at TCU. The conduct of the students is unacceptable. Boschini also said that there is a joint investigation between the city police and the campus police. He said there could be more arrests coming in the near future.
Some of the students were arrested on felony counts, while others were arrested on misdemeanor counts. The head coach of the football team, Gary Patterson, said that at first he was shocked when he heard the news. The next two emotions were hurt and then anger. He put up a statement on the football website that said drugs and drugs use will not be tolerated – period.
The four football players that were arrested were Ty Horn, offensive tackle, Devin Johnson, safety, D.J. Yendrey, defensive tackle, and Tanner Brock, linebacker. These four players were charged with delivery of marijuana. Both Brock and Johnson were charged with felonies.
The football team was 11-2 last season and it’s just months before it will begin its first year as a Big 12 conference team.
