ScaryGirl

ScaryGirl gained its fame when it was first released as a graphic novel. The novel soon won awards and spawned many toys, a flash based game and now it has finally made its way to the next generation consoles as an arcade adventure game. One of the first things that will grab your attention is its striking visual design, offering great platforming mechanics. During the review, I came across some areas where I felt the mechanics did not work properly; however, I feel that any true fan of platformer will love this game.

Most of ScaryGirl story is told through 2D cut-scenes. The tale follows a giant octopus who is the guardian of ScaryGirl and a bunny who floats living under her home. The story doesn’t play a very big role in the game; however, the visuals are so striking that it will keep you hooked to the game. The characters are shown in imaginative cities, caves and oceans. Bright and saturated colors give a unique life to these characters. The developers also bring the backgrounds to life by adding a lot of animation in them.

The gameplay of ScaryGirl isn’t as good as its art style. It doesn’t mean that its bad, it just doesn’t live up to the classic platform games like Mario or Sonic. You character can use her special tentacle arm to grapple areas and reach certain places that are otherwise impossible to reach. The tentacle arm ability also allows your character to pick up stuff that is out of reach. Throughout the game, you will come across scattered gems that you can collect. These gems act as the main currency of the game and let you upgrade your character.

One of the biggest flaws that I found in ScaryGirl during the review was its combat mechanics. The combat just didn’t feel fluent enough. You can perform combos just like in any other action games, but this style doesn’t suit a platformer. When a large group of enemies attack you, it’s almost impossible to get hold of what’s going on. If you are fine with the kind of combat ScaryGirl offers, this is a great platformer to pick up.
