It’s possible that Iran is ready to meet the allegations about its nuclear program head-on. The United Nation’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) delegation has arrived in Iran. Their mission, by all expectations, will be to see if Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons. Herman Nackaerts, the deputy director, is in charge of the delegation and he is also in charge of the country’s nuclear file. Rafael Grossi, who is the IAEA’s right hand man to the chief, is also on the team.
Nackaerts said beforehand that he wants Iran to work with his team in their probe. Tehran has said for the past three years that they will not discuss the allegations that they are building a nuclear weapon. Instead, Iran says that the allegations are nothing more than fabrications of lies from Western countries. Nackaerts is hoping that Tehran will be open to starting a dialogue with the team – one that he says is very overdue.
When the delegation arrived in Tehran, they were met by several people who were carrying photos of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshen, who was a nuclear expert that was killed a couple of weeks ago when a magnet bomb was placed on his car. Security officers at the airport quickly took the IAEA team away so that there was no confrontation.
The delegation is trying to get permission from Iran to talk to some of the key nuclear scientists in the country’s nuclear program, as well as to inspect documentation about such work. They also want Tehran to agree to discussions about their program in the future.
There are many in the international community who want Iran to completely stop their uranium enrichment program, which could lead to the creation of weapons-grade uranium. Iran maintains that their program is only designed to create nuclear energy and isotopes used in medical treatment.
The media in Iran has urged the government not to trust the IAEA inspectors, saying that they are spies. This mimics the suspicion that many people in Iran have for the United Nations experts and for the rest of the world.
