The Denver Broncos’ quarterback, Tim Tebow, has set a lot of records. Two of them were set this past Saturday, though, when more than 9400 tweets per second were sent after the first play of overtime. Tebow and the Broncos won the overtime toss and chose to receive. The game was tied at 23-23. In the very first play of overtime, Tim Tebow threw an 80 yard touchdown pass, giving the Broncos the win, 29-23.
Twitter buzzed with tweets of the winning pass and according to reports from the microblogging service, a new record was set. That touchdown garnered the most ever tweets for a sporting event. It was also second overall in the most tweets per second. The only thing that beat the tweets was last December when an anime film, Castle in the Sky, debuted in Japan. That event brought more than 25,000 tweets per second.
Another record that was set during the game was in terms of viewers. Not since 1988 has CBS seen so many viewers for an NFL wildcard game. With a Nielsen rating of 25.9, the game was certainly on more televisions throughout the United States than the executives at CBS expected.
The viewers are likely to return this next Saturday, when the Denver Broncos travel to the New England Patriots to face Tom Brady and his crew. There was a lot of controversy during the game against the Steelers, as it seems that the Steelers couldn’t get a penalty – even for blatant moves by the Broncos. This has been a recurring theme when the Broncos play at home. Things will likely be different when they play in New England. In addition, Tom Brady and the Patriots beat the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium in week 15, 41-23. There are more than a few Patriot fans that are really looking for Brady to hand Tebow another loss.
