Supernatural Recap – “Time after Time”

January 15, 2012 by: 0

The Leviathans and Dick Roman were in the background this week, as Dean was transported back to 1944. This was a great episode, with Dean finding out that Elliot Ness, who led the “Untouchables” in their fight against prohibition, was a hunter. The episode came as “Supernatural” won two People’s Choice Awards this week – one for Favorite SciFi Fantasy and the other for Favorite Network TV Drama. After seven seasons, this is obviously still a fan favorite.

The episode begins with Sam and Dean headed up to Ohio to visit with Sheriff Mills. She’s not doing so well with Bobby’s death and has tried to make up for it by clearing out his storage lockers and playing Mom to the Winchesters. While in Ohio, Sam and Dean stumble upon Chronos, who is the God of Time. Dean tackles Chronos, which ends up getting him transported back to 1944.

Sam is working with Jodie to figure out how to get Dean back; however, Dean is busy getting arrested in Chicago in 1944. His interviewer is none other than Elliot Ness and Dean is quite surprised to find out that Ness was a hunter, too. He springs Dean out, who is rather disappointed that this period in time isn’t quite like one of his favorite movies, “The Untouchables.”

Ness takes Dean to meet a lady who helps him with hunting – it’s not a hard jump to see a reference to Bobby in the brusque, but efficient older woman. She gives Dean a great makeover and he looks like he’s right at home in the 1940s. She also calls him an “idjit,” which was another tip of the hat to Bobby.

While Dean and Ness track Chronos, Sam and Jodie spend a bit of time remembering Bobby. It’s not a whiny crying time, either, but just remembering some of the good times. The two already realize that trying to fill Bobby’s shoes is going to be difficult. Sam and Jodie get a little bit drunk on a bottle of booze that Bobby was saving from Rufus. As Sam finally crashes on his “bed” on the floor, he sees his name scratched into the wood trim in the room. When he removes the trim, he finds a note that Dean left for him with the time and instructions needed to help him return to the right year.

It turns out that Chronos isn’t really a bad god – he simply wanted to keep returning to 1944 to see a woman that he fell in love with. The spell that Dean and Jodie do works, bringing Dean and Chronos to the present time. Sam ends up killing Chronos, which saves Dean. However, before Chronos dies, he tells Sam what his future holds – it’s full of black, sticky goo from Leviathans.
