PC Game Review: Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a brand new and highly anticipated MMORPG from Bioware. During the very initial phase of the review, I was presented with a jaw dropping cinematic that introduced me to the plot line of the game. The Old Republic will immediately ask you to choose a faction after you find out that the Sith have reclaimed the Korriban, giving rise to an unstoppable conflict between the Republic and the Empire. You are instantly asked to choose sides and after choosing, you are once again shown the background story of the faction with a brilliant cinematic.

After you choose the sides, you immediately find yourself in the character creation menu of the game. Star Wars: The Old Republic throws a lot of options to choose from, each race and class has their own perks and quirks. After you create your character, you are immediately shown a text sequence that tells you what and who you are. After I jumped in the game, during the review, I found myself a little lost because unlike World of Warcraft, the game doesn’t have a dedicated tutorial; instead you are given tips as you move on.

For new comers in the realm of MMORPG, it might get a little hard hitting with the Star Wars: The Old Republic. There is absolutely no explanation of what is going on except the fact that there are some tips. So where a seasoned MMO player will be able to know the difference between which quests are which, a new comer won’t be able to make any difference.

If you have ever played a MMORPG, you will immediately find yourself comfortable with the combat system. Star Wars: The Old Republic uses the basic combat system that is available in almost all MMORPGS including World of Warcraft. In most games, you click on a target and your character starts auto attacking, in The Old Republic, this mechanic is entirely changed. Instead of auto attacking, you now have to activate the basic attack ability every time you want to beat a foe.

Star Wars: The Old Republic offers plenty of other options that are best experienced by playing the game. Any MMORPG fan is highly recommended to try it out.
