This is the first time that suicide car bombs have been used in Syria since the uprising started nine months ago. The targets of the blasts appear to have been the country’s intelligence agencies. At least 44 people have been killed and over 150 were injured.
The Syria government wasted no time in using the bombings as proof that armed terrorist gangs are responsible for the violence in the country. President Assad wants the world to believe that these gangs of armed men are responsible for all of the civilian and protestor deaths and only want to overthrow Assad’s regime. However, opponents believe that the regime could actually be responsible for the suicide car bombs as a way to show the Arab League observers that the government is simply not behind the violence.
The Arab League observers only arrived in Syria two days ago and only after a long battle between the Syrian government and the Arab League. The opposition believes that Assad will only allow the Arab League observers to be in parts of the country that haven’t been devastated by Assad’s security forces.
According to state TV, investigators believe that al Qaida is behind the attacks. The Arab League observers have been taken to the scene of the bombing. Faysal Mekdad, the deputy foreign minister, told reporters at the bombing site that this was proof of terrorism and that those terrorists are behind the deaths to army and civilians.
The site of the bombings was horrific, littered with burned and torn bodies. The bombings happened outside of the General Intelligence Agency buildings in Damascus, as well as another building that housed military intelligence. These two agencies have been responsible for the campaign against the anti-government protestors, according to the opposition. There were dozens of burned cars and significant damage to buildings all around the area.
