According to reports, it was previously revealed that Verizon Wireless had a new plan of charging $2 to its customers for each payment the subscribers made using their phone or online, using their debit or credit cards. Verizon’s plan however got its customers extremely hyper, who expressed frustration at their company’s new idea. However, after the whole customer backlash, Verizon Wireless dropped the new plan.
Writing on its website in a statement on Friday, Verizon said that the feedback of its customers led for it to make the decision of dropping the convenience fee it wanted to start charging its customers from January 15th.
The company wanted to steer customers towards two things that are cheaper and also more reliable; electronic check payments and automatic credit card payments. The announcement about charging its customers fee was made by Verizon on Thursday. However, someone started a petition on website change.org, which had 95,000 names in support of the cause by Friday afternoon, opposing the new fee introduction by the biggest cell phone company in the United States. Molly Katchpole, the person who started the petition against Verizon’s new fee, was also responsible for making Bank of America drop a per month fee of $5 for use of debit card.
Usually, payment processors working in line with power companies charge this sort of convenience fees, which goes up to $5 for each payment made using the internet of the phone however, cell phone companies have not started to charge this kind of fee before. The uproar against Verizon Wireless because of the announcement the company made on Thursday means that it will have to be patient and wait further.
According to official statistics, Verizon Wireless serves 91 million cellphones and other gadgets/devices on accounts which get the company direct money and more who pay through other companies (indirect method of payments).
