Gadget Review: Promise Pegasus R6

November 26, 2011 by: 0

In this review, I will talk about the Pegasus R6, a RAID storage panel from Promise Technology.

The Pegasus R6 is the first ever external third party storage device that can connect to Apple’s fast Thunderbolt ports. It consists of 2 Thunderbolt ports, giving you transfer rates up to 10 times faster than traditional external storage devices. The Pegasus is a successor to the Light Peak hardware storage device and features the ability to connect using copper wires. The Thunderbolt port has many receiver chips installed on it, giving you unimaginable speeds with the highest standards possible. To find out more, read our review.

To start my review, I will talk about the design and features of the storage device.

The Pegasus R6 features 10GBPS data streaming interface, which means that you should be able to connect a complete cluster of hard disks in RAID settings and get amazing writing and reading speeds. The Pegasus ships in two different models, the R4 and R6. The R4 model lets you connect 4 hard drives in a raid configuration and the R6 lets you connect 6. The removable trays on the device let you install both 3.5 standard disks and 2.5 laptop oriented disks.

Moving further down the review, the 2.5 inch hard disk tray lets you easily install Solid State Drives into a RAID configuration, giving you even better performance. The R6 comes in the form of tower made of metal and plastic. The installation of hard disks is easy, thanks to its click open trays. The only drawback of the Pegasus R6 drive bay is that it only supports Thunderbolt ports at the moment. You cannot connect the hard drive using eSATA ports or firewire, giving you less options of connecting the device. Each tray on the device can support 3TB of hard disk storage, which means you can juice it up to 18TB of storage.

To finish off my review, I would say that the Promise Pegasus R6 is a great external drive that offers unparallel speeds, unfortunately its lack of other ports means that it is targeted at a very limited market.
