This claim has been made in a complain filed in August by Data Protection Commissioner of Ireland. The complain said that Facebook users are encouraged to provide the personal data of other individuals including name, phone numbers and email addresses which are used by Facebook to build “extensive profile” of non-users.
The complaint said, “Facebook Ireland is gathering excessive amounts of information about data subjects without notice or consent by the data subject.”
The complaint also added that in several cases the information “might be embarrassing or intimidating for the data subject. The information might also constitute sensitive data such as political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation and so forth.”
On August 18 Max Schrems lodged formal complaint to IDC against Facebook Ireland. Schrems, 24 year Austrian law student asked Facebook for his data after attending a talk by Facebook in California at Santa Clara University while he was attending study abroad program. He was surprised when the company provided him with CD that contained 1200 pages of already deleted personal materials. The material ranged from friend requests to history of pokes, chat messages and unfriended people.
He then formally filed 22 complaints in IDC against Facebook that led to audit of Facebook Ireland starting next week.
