Woman Pays $180 for Wooden iPad 2 in McDonald’s Parking Lot and Is Surprised to Find It’s a Fake

September 5, 2011 by: 1

Ashley McDowell might be somewhat naïve, but she didn’t want to miss out on what she thought was a good deal. She was approached in the parking lot of Spartanburg, South Carolina McDonald’s by two men. The men said that they had an iPad they needed to sell. They showed her a brand new iPad and told her that they would take $300 for it.

McDowell only had $180 on her, as it seems the thieves didn’t want to take a credit card for payment. However, they told McDowell that they would make a concession for her and accept her $180 payment. Once she handed over the money, they gave her a FedEx box they got from the trunk of her Chevy Impala.

At this point, a savvy shopper would have opened the box to make sure the iPad inside worked correctly and did look as new as expected. However, McDowell didn’t open the box until she returned home. Imagine her surprise when she found a wooden iPad inside, complete with icons for Apple, iPod, and Safari. There was even a Best Buy sticker on it. Of course, McDowell wasn’t going to be checking her email on it or doing anything with it but using it for firewood.

Now, before you start laughing at this story, think back to some of the decisions you’ve made. This lady thought she was getting an iPad for $180. Who wouldn’t want to get the world’s most popular electronic device for more than half off?

The police in Spartan County, South Carolina have been notified and a local newspaper has released the story hoping that other people will not be duped into getting the wooden iPad. It’s really rather interesting that the thieves put stickers on the wooden iPad. Did they really think that someone would think it was real? Perhaps they would just think it’s the ecological version of the device?
