Have you lately found yourself talking on the phone while watching television and checking e-mails?
We’re already distracted while reading the above sentence? Well, you are certainly not the only one.
The technology of the internet has only not provided drastic change to our lives, but it has changed the way in which our brains operate, according to a research conducted by a leading UK social psychologist Sheila Keegan.
Sheila Keegan has said that the internet has caused reduction in our ability to concentrate and think and with too much of a long-term use it could very well cause the brain to dysfunction.
She said that we now spend large and a constantly growing flow of hours on the web and, consequentially, our minds are coming back to superficial thinking.
She said that now we are more easily caused to be distracted, and our thought process has developed a certain staccato quality which lacks concentration.
She said that this problem is so widespread now that studies and research has now concluded that a long-term addiction to the internet will result in a chronic dysfunction of the human brain, which, she added, is definitely a highly scary thought.
She further stated that more research was required on the consequences of long-term internet usage, particularly pertaining to younger children. Moreover, she said that in the United States it has been realized through research that a few children as small as 5 years old can spend upto 6 hours in a day staring at a screen. Too lengthy periods which might be spent alone starting at a computer screen or a TV screen means that many of these children really are not developing the skills needed, socially, to progress in later life.
Children need a fair balance in life, and they can definitely acquire a lot of learning through the internet, she added.
She also stated the brain is very malleable. So it is hard to state what the internet could do to the human mind in the long-term. There are needed more studies on the issue, it is kind of like the change of climate, we really cannot wait so that it goes on ahead and happens.
