Twitter the popular microblogging site is looking to place promoted tweets in timeline to increase its advertising business.
This is not the first time that Twitter is going around with its promoted tweets. In 2010, this feature was first introduced where advertisers can pay for sponsored tweets to appear top of search results for specific keywords.
But on Thursday the microblogging site announced in a blog post that company’s sponsored tweets followed by users will now be placed in their timeline. Instead of promoted tweets that moves down the timeline similar to other tweets, these sponsored tweets will stay or near the time of user’s timeline until they check the tweets.
This new feature will be tested by Twitter in the upcoming weeks with companies like Best Western, Groupon, Dell, JetBlue and HBO. In a post Twitter said, “From the start, our philosophy around advertising has been simple: We put our users first and strive to create products that enrich the Twitter experience for every Twitter user.”
According to Technology Business Research analyst, Ezra Gottheil Twitter is on right track in terms to earning ad revenue. He said Twitter will have to prove that this feature will increase awareness and click-through. If Twitter does that, sponsors will surely pay.
