Reports all over the internet are suggesting that PopCap, the developer behind the popular titles such as Bejeweled and Plants vs Zombies is about to be acquired. The price tag for the company has been expected to be more than $1 billion dollars. Although many reports are suggesting that the casual games developer are on sale, no one has actually said anything about potential buyers. Some popular tech blogs however believe that Electronic Arts, the publishing giant for console and PC games may acquire the casual games developer. Electronic Arts is considered one of the biggest publishers of video games on consoles and PC. The company has recently been trying to get hold of casual games in the mobile market, and has spawned many editions of its popular games on consoles and PC on the mobile platform. Analysts believe that the move of acquiring Electronic Arts is going to greatly help the publisher expand into the mobile gaming territory.
The reason why PopCap has such a high price tag is because the developer has itself spawned many successful titles across different platforms. The company has also opened up a side office to work and experiment on the mobile platform. Many analysts still believe that if Electronic Arts is to acquire PopCap, it will be huge risk for the company whose shares are valued at more than $7 billion, where as PopCap is valued at about $100 to $155 million.
In another report, it was suggested that Zynga, the maker of the popular social networking game, Farmville, is also citing its eyes on PopCap. The company in the past had plans to acquire PopCap, so it does make them potential buyers. Another reason to believe Zynga might acquire PopCap is that the company has recently been seen acquiring many other smaller studios. But in other reports, analysts believe that the high cost of PopCap has already put Zynga on the doubt list.
