Cellphone Radiation Norms

Almost every week some researchers are out with new problems that could be caused by the cellphone radiations. So the government of India is out with the norm to adhere to best global and scientific benchmarks in the telecom sector in India.

The news from WHO last week stating about reports of brain cancer that could be caused due to the radiations from cellphones has made the government of India to react to it. The Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Sachin Pilot said that India is in a very good position in the telecom sector so he wants to avoid any such health hazards that could be caused by the mobile phones and the towers.

Last year in August government had set up an inter-ministerial group to evaluate the evidence into the radiation guidelines for the mobile towers and also adopt new guidelines. The group consisted of experts from Department of Telecom, Ministry of Health, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Environment and Forests and Indian Council of Medical Research.

The government made it mandatory for all cellphone manufacturers to declare the radiation level of each of its handsets. Even for the mobile towers the radiation level has to be reduced ten times: if it was f/200 watts per square meter before then it has to come down to f/2000 watts per square meter.
