Someone once intimated that taxes are for the little people. Judging by the trouble that Democrats are having with their taxes, this adage holds true. There is then the celebrity contingent which is often brought down by IRS. Some people have done time for tax evasion. Marlee Matlin has learnt to her chagrin that taxes are pesky little things that refuse to be ignored. There is no suggestion that she was deliberately committing evasion but the reality is that there is a tax bill that is waiting to be paid or else there will be trouble. A good tax lawyer might come in handy. This is the time when wealthy celebrities must wish that America was a tax haven. Monaco beckons for those that are willing to live in the expensive boxes.
An actress is required to pay up
That solemn bill can land on your doorstep at any time. You have to be prepared to cooperate with the IRS or else they can make your life very difficult. In response the actress has decided to sell her house in Los Angeles. The children have not been spared either because they are going to have to give up their prestigious private school places. The credit crunch seems to have hit them hard with a bill of $50,000.That might appear to be peanuts but it is no fun if you were not expecting the IRS to send you such bad news. The tax officials have a habit of choosing the most inconvenient time to ask you for money. Of course when they owe you money the story is reversed. That is the pain that we have to pay in order to support our bloated government.
Perhaps back taxes are really unfair. The IRS should make an effort to send out accurate reminders of tax obligations. Of course it is much easier if an employer deducts the money or if there is some way of levying indirect taxes. Celebrities earn an income and then spend it without first considering the fact that the government wants a piece of the cake. At 45 Marlee Matlin is crying foul. She has admitted that she is going through a payment schedule in order to keep the Internal Revenue Service at bay. The bill relates to 2009 so probably they have been sitting on the amount until the brown stuff hit the fan.
How will a man of the law react?
In a rather ironic twist, Marlee Matlin’s husband is a police officer in the Los Angeles Burbank municipality. Having decided to sell the family home, they are requesting a price in the region of $899,000. For nearly a million dollars you get five bedrooms and 2600 square feet of total living space. The suburb of Pasadena is not as exciting a place as some of the very premium locations in Hollywood but it can do the trick. The kids will be put in a public school within an acceptable suburb. Having won an academy award for “Children of a Lesser God”, Marlee Matlin has been a great presence on hit shows including “Picket Fences”, “Seinfeld” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.
