While the man’s name isn’t available in court documents, the ruling from the court is generating some interesting conversations in Madrid. A 25-year-old Spanish man has been ordered to move out of his parents’ home and get a job. The man had filed a court action in Spain’s capital because his parents had quit giving him his monthly allowance money.
The man took his parents to court because his parents quit giving him $588 each month because he refused to look for work. The judge, however, agreed with the parents and told the man that he must move out of his parents’ home within 30 days. The judge went onto say that he does understand that the man was studying law, but at very slowly. He probably would not be able to complete the degree for several years; however, the judge felt that he would be quite capable of finding work. The parents, however, will still cover the monthly payment for their son’s car, as well as $292 to help with food and other expenses.
The Malaga family court said that the home situation had deteriorated quite rapidly. The parents said that their son was both physically and verbally assaulting. According to Euro Weekly News, the man admitted to these accusations. In Spain, it is not unusual for children to live with their parents until they are in their 30s. This is the result of a difficult job market, with unemployment rates for youths at 40.5%. This is the highest of any country in the European Union.
Currently, there are 1.3 million homes in Spain where no one is working. Additional figures from the last quarter of 2010 put the number of unemployed Spaniards at 4.6 million. Many are dubbed “ni-ni”, which means that they are neither working nor studying.
