Just when we were getting ready to say goodbye to Symbian, Nokia surprises us announcing that the Symbian operating system is not going anywhere, for the time being.
The reasons why depend on the fact that ” only because we are changing our direction regarding our smartphones platform does not mean that the existent platform is completely excluded” said a Nokia representative.
“We still have obligations towards our users, developers, business partners and clients” Nokia also said.
Nokia estimates that, currently, there are approximately 200 million Symbian users all over the world, and this number is going to increase with up to 150 million in the near future.
“Symbian is here and it is going to stay here. The platform is going to stick around, but it will be behind the corner” the Nokia representative also said.
Nokia also made assurances that they will continue to provide support for the Symbian platform, declaring that more than 50 improvements are going to be released this year, both visually and performance wise.
On the other hand, the Symbian market share has dropped to 37,9% in 2010.
