Hardware acceleration is one of the most trendy technologies nowadays. Not only video players are offering this feature. Right now this feature is also present on modern Web Browsers. The newest follower of hardware acceleration is Google Chrome 7.

Chrome gets inspired by Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9, web browsers that have already made their intentions public.

For those of you who do not know, hardware acceleration moves different operations to the video card. More processing power means a better functionality of the web browser and a faster loading time.

Unlike Firefox and IE, Google Chrome has a different security model, also named sandbox. It doesn’t allow web sites to have direct access to the features of the operating system. For this reason, the implementation of hardware acceleration is more difficult for Google.

Hardware acceleration is available on Google Chrome 7, dev version, which can be downloaded here.

It is only available to hose that modifies the launching command of the program.

To activate the hardware acceleration in Google Chrome 7 you will have to insert the “–enable-accelerated-compositing” just as you can see in the image below. The correct command line should look like this: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe –enable-accelerated-compositing. You should of course replace USERNAME with yours.

Also, we mention that, at least for now, hardware acceleration of Google Chrome only works on Windows.
